Frequently Asked Question
True Grass-Fed beef comes from cattle birthed and living its whole life on pasture. Once it’s weaned from the mama cow around six to eight months after birth, it eats nothing but grass and silage (dried grass). There are many “grass-fed programs that allows for some degree of grain being mixed into the diet but that is not the case with our suppliers. Our grass-fed beef comes from cattle raised entirely on pasture eating nothing but grass.
The truth is, it depends on where the animal is raised and it’s quality of life. In our case, the cattle is grown on ranches close to the ocean in an eco system experiencing over 180 days of rain annually and benefits from lush pasture year around, full of natural minerals and nutrition. While our animal grows faster than conventional grass-fed beef due to the abundance of fresh grass, it still contains a lot of the same “healthy fats” as its less fortunate brethren grown in other parts of the world.
Most grass-fed beef contains less fat than grain-fed beef. This is due to the animals living on pasture and being allowed to roam. Also, grass naturally produce less fat than grain. A comparison would be a person living on a diet containing only of burgers and fries, compared to someone who works out and eats more vegetables. Our beef contains plenty fat due to the abundance of fresh grass available on our pastures. Our cattle can grow up to four pound per day just eating grass. The result is an animal that matures at a you age while still having lived a healthy and happy life. This is one of the reasons why our grass-fed beef is so much better in flavor and tenderness than what people traditionally expect from grass-fed beef.
Yes, conventional beef is milder in flavor due to the diet of grains allowing the animals to gain weight quickly. Grass-Fed beef has a beefier flavor profile. We often compare conventional beef to butter and our beef to high quality olive oil. The flavors are more complex. One reason is the age of the animal. The older the animal, the more flavor. It traditionally takes longer to grow an animal on pasture compared to putting it in a feedlot with access to grain all day long. There really is no right or wrong when it comes to flavor preference, its all very subjective. However, when you take into account the animals quality of life, the negative effect of industrial farming on our environment as well as the health benefits derived from a life lived on pasture, we think that our beef is the perfect combination of high quality, healthy diet, sustainable farming practices and animal welfare.
We recognize that some customers looking for different eating experiences and we feel that as long as our animals are well cared for and our ranchers are still using sustainable farming practices, we still stay true to our core beliefs. Our grain-fed beef comes from cattle still raised on pasture but either finished in a feedlot using sustainable and humane practices or allowed to eat grain from ambulant feeding bins moved between paddocks with the animals. All our cattle is humanely raised and never given additional hormones or antibiotics.
